Interpreter Services

Welcome to NOVA’s Interpreter Services Office! This office provides an array of services, including American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreting and Cued Language Transliteration (CLT). Services are provided to students across all campuses to support communication access in the academic setting. Faculty, staff, and visitors can also request ASL interpreters or CLTs to participate in college activities.

How to Request Services

The hosts of meetings and events are expected to submit a request for ASL interpreters or CLTs on behalf of students, faculty, staff, and visitors who indicate a need using the one-time event request form.

A sign language interpreter is a highly trained professional who will come to your class or meeting to provide access to deaf or hard of hearing students or faculty members. The interpreter will sign everything they hear to the deaf person, and they will say aloud anything the deaf person signs.

Yes. A sign language interpreter will interpret everything you say into sign language and everything you sign into spoken language. Interpreters are ethically and legally bound to provide access to all speech, auditory sounds, and stimuli.

Sign language interpreters are available, upon request, for any college sponsored event. Students, faculty, staff, and visitors requesting sign language interpreters for a one-time event should do so through this link: https://nvcc-accommodate.symplicity.com/activity_provider_request/.

It typically takes two to four weeks to schedule interpreters for semester long classes, and a minimum of two business days to schedule interpreters for one-time events.

No. Any person requiring access to NVCC may request an interpreter at any time. Students, faculty, staff, and visitors requesting sign language interpreters for a one-time event should do so through this link: https://nvcc-accommodate.symplicity.com/activity_provider_request/

Email the interpreters office at interpreters@nvcc.edu as soon as you are aware of the need for a cancellation.

No. Interpreters are assigned a set schedule and may have other assignments before or after an assigned class or meeting time. If more time is needed, please email interpreters@nvcc.edu two business days in advance to request a change.
