CCRV - Frequently Asked Questions

Program overview

CCRV is a statewide initiative that allows eligible high school juniors and seniors to earn transferable college credits through the Passport Program (16 credits) or the Uniform Certificate of General Studies (UCGS, 31 credits) at no tuition cost. The program is designed to help you get a head start on college while still in high school.

CCRV helps you:

  • Earn college credits early, reducing the time and cost for a degree.
  • Build confidence in college-level coursework.
  • Gain access to college resources and services.
  • Strengthen your college applications with official college transcripts.

Passport Program: 16 transferable college credits, ideal for starting college general education requirements. CCRV gives students access to the courses necessary to complete this program as a senior in high school.

UCGS: 31 credits, more comprehensive, covers general studies courses widely accepted by Virginia public colleges and universities. CCRV gives students access to the courses necessary to complete this program as a junior in high school.

Participating in CCRV allows you to accelerate your college journey, save money on tuition and complete transferable credits before graduating high school—all while receiving support from your high school and NOVA.

CCRV removes the financial barrier of tuition and course fees for eligible students. By earning up to 31 college credits in high school, you can potentially reduce the cost of your bachelor’s degree and shorten the time to complete college.

Courses and pathways

NOVA has identified courses that satisfy the Passport and UCGS requirements. Each high school has a CCRV Pathway Sheet listing which courses are available at your school.

Yes. CCRV courses can be taken:

  • At your high school, taught by credentialed instructors.
  • Asynchronously through NOVA Online if your high school does not offer the course.

No. If your high school offers the course through a credentialed instructor, you must enroll there. Online courses are only an option if the course isn’t available at your school.

If no in-person option is available at your high school, NOVA will provide the course online at no cost.

Yes. You can take any UCGS course taught by a credentialed instructor at your high school, even if it is not part of the official NOVA CCRV pathway.

These credits may count toward Passport or UCGS requirements if there is an established equivalency with a VCCS/UCGS course. For more information on how credits from these types of courses are accepted and/or applied, refer to the college's Credit for Prior Learning manual.

All Dual Enrollment students will be assigned to the UCGS program, allowing them to monitor their progress directly in the college’s Student Information System (SIS) through their MyNOVA student account.

Online course information

Courses are asynchronous, meaning you can complete coursework on your own schedule outside regular school hours.

They are primarily asynchronous, but all assessments are proctored virtually.

NOVA Online uses Honorlock to proctor online exams. Honorlock helps monitor exams taken remotely.

You need a Windows or Mac computer with a webcam and microphone and a reliable internet connection.

No. Honorlock does not work with iPads, tablets, or Chromebooks. You will need access to a Windows or Mac computer for proctored exams.

Enrollment and declaration

Submit the NOVA CCRV Declaration in the Dual Enrollment portal to formally express your intent to participate.

The form confirms your eligibility, acknowledges your responsibilities and allows NOVA to officially enroll you in CCRV courses.

You may withdraw or drop courses following NOVA’s procedures through your MyNOVA account. Keep in mind that grades from CCRV courses are official and impact your college transcript.

Under NOVA’s Academic Load policy, Dual Enrollment students can enroll in up to 18 credits per semester. Taking more than 18 credits requires approval through an Academic Overload Request (Form 125-016).

To qualify, students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher based on their most recent 12 college credits or full-time semester and show consistent academic success.

Academic and transcript considerations
