DEI InNOVAtion Program

2023-24 Application Information


To provide support to NOVA faculty and staff to complete innovative and informative projects that further NOVA's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Diversity, Equity & Inclusion InNOVAtion Program is presented by the Office of DEI.


NOVA teaching faculty (FT/PT), administrative faculty, professional faculty, and classified staff. A strong preference will be given to proposals that:

  • Impacts at least one of the key pillars of NOVA’s current Strategic Plan, Inspiring Excellence: A Bold Blueprint for Student Success.
  • Connects to NOVA’s mission and core values, and
  • Demonstrates a college-wide impact, cross-campus collaboration, or directly involves students.

Please note funds may not be used to provide compensation to NOVA employees.


Awards will range between $100 - $3,000 to allow for the pursuit and completion of an innovative DEI project.

Awardees will be announced in December 2023 and will have the Spring semester of 2024 to complete projects. Upon completion, awardees will submit an evaluation of the project to NOVA's Office of DEI.


Projects will be featured on the NOVA DEI website and other college-wide communication efforts.


Project leads are required to understand and follow all college and/or VCCS procurement policies and procedures. All transactions must be channeled through and approved via the eVA procurement management system. The Office of DEI can provide some assistance in these matters, but project leads are responsible for managing budgets and submitting proper and timely paperwork. A letter of support from the applicant's supervisor is required to ensure the supervisor is aware of the project and supports the applicant in dedicating time and effort towards the project's completion.


  • Project Application Opens: Monday, August 18th, 2023
  • Application Deadline: Friday, October 6th, 2023
  • Proposal Review: October 9, 2023–November 10th,
  • Awards Announced: December 4th, 2023

Application Contents

A completed application will require the following elements. Please note that letter(s) of support from faculty or staff member's supervisor(s) will need to be submitted with the application.

  • Project title
  • Name, title, email, campus affiliation, and department affiliation of award applicants
  • Description of the project
  • Rationale for the project (i.e. link to the College Strategic Plan, Mission, Core Values, etc.)
  • Explanation of the budget proposal and evidence to support the budgetary projections are accurate.
  • Explanation of the timeline of activities/project management plan/clarity on logistics
  • Explanation of how the project will be assessed for DEI impact
  • Letter(s) of support from the faculty and/or staff member's supervisor(s)


Applications will be evaluated by a review committee that includes representatives from the DEI Council, the Office of DEI, and the NOVA Educational Foundation Board.

Applications will be evaluated based on the following rubric:

  1. Description of the project - 5 points
  2. Rationale for the project - 5 points
  3. Explanation of Budget - 5 points
  4. Explanation of Timeline - 5 points
  5. Explanation of Assessment - 5 points
