Steps to Submit an Eligible Application

Follow these step-by-step directions to successfully submit an eligible application to the Health Sciences and Nursing programs.

Apply to NOVA
  • Apply to NOVA as a degree-seeking student.
  • Reapply if it has been more than 3 semesters since you attended
Did you know?
  • Students may be initially placed in the General Studies Health Sciences major to complete pre-requisites
  • Program placement to a MEC major will happen after official acceptance
Complete an Information Session
  • Complete the program Information Session
  • Sessions may be updated annually; check back after the application deadline
  • Some sessions may be attended online
In-person sessions held at the MEC in Springfield, Virginia are required for:

Diagnostic Medical Sonography
(Prospective Student Workshop)

Occupational Therapy Assistant

Physical Therapist Assistant

  • Refer to the program website for dates and rooms
  • Arrive on time or you must attend another date
  • Please do not bring children or guests


Did you know?

  • Codes are provided at information sessions as proof of attendance
  • You will need to submit the code with your online application
Request Transfer Credit Evaluation

This step is only required for students who completed courses at another college or university besides NOVA, including another Virginia Community College.

It is not required if you completed all requirements at NOVA.

International Evaluations:

  • International transcripts (high school and college) must be evaluated first by an international evaluation agency
  • NOVA accepts evaluations from wes.org(College Only), www.ece.org (HS and College) or www.ierf.org (HS and College)
  • Refer to the Transfer Credit Evaluation website for more information

Did you know?

  • Transcripts are evaluated by the College Records Office
  • Transcripts cannot be submitted with your online application
  • Transcripts cannot be evaluated last minute at the program deadline
Take Placement Tests

This step is only required for students who have not already completed or transferred college English or Math

  • Placement Test results are valid for five years
  • Developmental courses are available and also qualify applicants after completion

Take TEAS Test

This step is only required for the following programs:

Diagnostic Medical Sonography | Dental Hygiene | Medical Laboratory Technology |

Nursing | Physical Therapist Assistant | Radiography

Know the TEAS score requirements and deadlines for your program

Plan to take the TEAS Test according to the following guidelines:

  • Take it after completing a minimum of ENG 111, BIO 141, and the math placement test (recommended)
  • There is a 1-month retest waiting period
  • The test can be taken 3 times within January to December
  • Scores are valid for 3 years


  • Purchase a TEAS study guide or borrow a copy at the library (if needed)
  • Contact MEC Tutoring to request access to a free practice test and a recorded review session

Take the Test

Submit scores

  • Scan the score report provided to you by MEC Testing or print your report directly from ATI Testing
  • Attach your scores to your online application when you apply
  • Click on View Application at the bottom of your confirmation email to add attachments if you forgot to attach your scores
  • Please do not select to have scores sent directly to NOVA. Attach your scores to your application to ensure accurate and timely processing

  • There are different report formats for TEAS; make sure you submit the correct format


Complete Application Requirements
  • See Health Sciences & Nursing Requirements & Deadlines (see top of page) for the year you plan to apply or attend the program Information Session to get the specific application requirements for your program
  • Plan your schedule so all requirements will be done by the deadline
  • Allow enough time for retests if TEAS testing is required

Did you know?

  • Final grades for all pre-requisite courses must be posted before applying
  • Transfer credit and credit by exam results must be posted before applying
  • Transcripts from outside NOVA cannot be evaluated close to or at the deadline
  • Your application will be marked ineligible if any requirements are missing
Apply to the Program
  • Submit an online Health Sciences & Nursing Application within the specified application period
  • Attach all supporting documents if required by the program
  • Complete a separate application for each program
  • Allow up to 8 weeks after the deadline for a status notification

Did you know?

  • The online application will only allow submission within the application period
  • Application periods open at midnight on the start date and close at 11:59 pm on the end date
  • Your application will be marked ineligible if any requirements or needed attachments are missing
  • There are 4 steps of application review:

    Step 1 – review of application criteria
    Step 2 – domicile review
    Step 3 – ranking of applicants
    Step 4 – final notification from the program

  • All notifications will be sent to your email
  • Additional information may be requested so check your email frequently and respond promptly
  • Ineligible applications will not be forwarded for ranking
  • All accepted applicants must attend a mandatory program orientation to secure their spot in the program

Copy of current RT(R), RDMS, RDCS, or RVT licensure or certification (if applicable)

Occupational Therapy Assistant OTA Program Observation Form
OTA Program Work Experience Form (if applicable)
Physical Therapist Assistant Copy of TEAS scores including the score for the Anatomy and Physiology science section
Clinic Observation Form (Note: The applicant must mail this form via certified mail to the MEC. Please refer to the PTA Information Session handout for mailing instructions.)
Radiation Oncology ROC applications with all attachments must be mailed directly to Virginia Western Community College.
Radiography Copy of TEAS Test Scores
All other programs No supporting documents are required

What happens after I submit my application?

  • Check your student email for notification regarding your status
  • EMS Applicants: allow up to 10 business days
  • All other applicants: allow up to 8 weeks after the deadline

  • View the HSN Application Frequently Asked Questions
  • Forgot an attachment? Click on the green "View Application" link at the bottom of your confirmation email to add a missing attachment.
  • For technical problems with the application, email applymec@nvcc.edu from your student email. Include your name, student ID number, program, description of the problem or a screenshot so the issue can be tracked and investigated.

Common Reasons for Incomplete Applications

  • Missing a required course or test
  • Not having the minimum grade required
  • Not having the minimum TEAS score required
  • Not having the minimum cumulative GPA required
  • Request for transfer credit evaluation not submitted in time
  • Expired placement test or TEAS scores
