What do I need to know about NOVA Online Courses?

Syllabus

  • Courses are made available in Canvas the first day the course is scheduled to begin. Once you have access to your course in Canvas you will see the full length syllabus and course requirements.

Basic Skills Required

  • Read and write in English
  • Operate a computer
  • Basic computer software programs such as MS Office
  • Access and browse the Internet
  • Create and send email (with/without attachment)
  • Manage time well
  • Study independently

Testing

  • Class meetings/labs (less than 5 times)
  • Field trips
  • Group/individual course projects

To succeed in a NOVA Online course, you should be prepared to manage your time, stay organized and take an active role in your learning. Before and throughout your course, faculty would expect you to:

  • Review your course information by selecting your semester, discipline and course.
  • Read your syllabus and keep track of important dates, including enrollment deadlines, refunds, assignment due dates, withdrawal deadlines and the end of the course.
  • Check your VCCS student email regularly and use it for all official communication.
  • Purchase your required textbooks and course materials.
  • Access your course in Canvas when it opens on the first day of class and complete the first required assignment.
  • Create a study schedule and stay on top of weekly coursework and deadlines.
  • Contact your instructor if you have questions, need assistance, need an extension or are considering withdrawing from the course.
  • Be comfortable using basic computer applications, email, the internet and any technology required for your course.
  • If you're outside the area, arrange proctoring by submitting the Proctor Request Form or using ProctorU, if required.

Thousands of NOVA Online students have been successful, and you can be, too. Because there are few or no classes to attend, YOU are responsible for directing your learning. The following are a few suggestions to help you succeed in your course:

  • Start your course as soon as it opens.
  • Set aside dedicated study time each week and stick to a routine.
  • Check Canvas and your VCCS student email regularly for announcements, assignments and updates.
  • Review upcoming assignments early so you can plan ahead and avoid last-minute work.
  • Back up your assignments regularly to avoid losing your work.
  • Contact your instructor as soon as you have questions or need assistance.

NOVA Online staff members are generally available during these hours. Extended hours are often in place during peak registration periods around the beginning of the semester.
