Housing

Various types of rental assistance available to low-income community residents:

Housing Programs by County

Alexandria: The Office of Housing provides a range of services to renters in partnership with the Department of Community and Human Services and the Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority.
Arlington: The Housing Division provides information and resources to help low-income individuals and families find affordable housing in Arlington.
Fairfax: Housing and Community Development have Fairfax County Rental Program (FCRP) which includes all rental property owned by the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA).
Loudoun: Affordable Dwelling Unit Program enables eligible non-homeowners the opportunity to rent an apartment from a participating apartment complex, at a rent below that of similar units at the complex.
Prince William County: The Rental Assistance Program housing choice voucher program is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments.

Shelter

Emergency shelters and crisis emergency assistance available for individuals and families who are homeless.

Transportation Resources

OmniRide

NOVA is partnered with PRTC to offer a discounted bus pass valid for OmniRide buses throughout Prince William County. One payment allows you unlimited rides throughout the duration of the current semester on all OmniRide Local, East-West Express, and Metro Express buses. You can buy a pass at the Manassas and Woodbridge Campus Parking Services office and the OmniRide Transit Center. Passes are non-transferable; one user per pass. Dial-A-Ride

Subsidized taxicab from participating companies, traveling anywhere within their service area. There are no restrictions on trip purposes. This is a program for Fairfax County residents who are income-eligible. For more information contact 703.222.9764

Alexandria City

Transportation services for Homeless and Homeless Case Management programs include limited assistance with bus tokens, METRO passes for job interviews, and for transients. For more information contact 703.746.5700

The Car Ministry

Legal Service Resources

Accessing the right type of legal services and ensuring that related costs are affordable or even free can be challenging. While our program does not specialize in offering any type of legal assistance, we can help make referrals to community providers to help with your situation. Listed below are just a few of the most frequently used legal services in our area.

Legal Services of Northern Virginia

LSNV is the largest legal aid organization in Northern Virginia, helping thousands of clients each year in civil legal matters. They partner closely with other legal aid organizations, state and local bar associations, as well as the courts to serve the region’s low-income and neediest populations. LSNV provides services regarding consumer, elder, family, human trafficking, housing, child advocacy and education, public benefits, veterans law project, and support for re-entry and return to communities.

Staff and volunteers provide legal advice, brief services, and representation in administrative hearings and in court. They also deliver community legal education and partner with other community agencies, task forces, and coordinated response teams to find innovative solutions to broader problems.

How Do I Apply?

To determine whether they can help you, they must screen you for eligibility. During this brief conversation, a member of the Intake team will gather demographic information, including household size, income, and asset information, will conduct a required check for conflicts of interest, and get a brief description of your problem.

You can apply for services in three ways:

ONLINE - The online application will give your essential information, but you will still need to speak to an intake paralegal to complete the application.
BY PHONE - They primarily accept requests for assistance by phone (703.778.6800) from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 pm. to 3:30 p.m. Monday – Thursday. Telephone intake is not available on Friday.
IN-PERSON - Applications for assistance are accepted in person at their offices from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday – Friday. LSNV is closed for inventory day the fourth Monday of each month.

Childcare

Childcare expenses can be extremely expensive, especially for working individuals who are attending college; however, multiple childcare assistance programs and affordable options are available to eligible parents and families.

Check your City/County office for additional programs! Depending on which City/County you live in, additional childcare programs may be offered. For example, Fairfax County offers the Child Care Assistance and Referral Program which provides:

- Resources and Referrals to families about various center-based and family childcare programs located throughout the county.
- Financial assistance for childcare to eligible Fairfax County families.
- Support to childcare programs and providers.

Talk with your current childcare provider about subsidized tuition options or affordable pricing they may offer. Many providers provide in-house discount options that can be accessed by participating in their income assessment policies.
The Child Care Subsidy Program provides financial assistance to eligible families to help pay for the cost of childcare so they can work or attend education or training programs. The Child Care Subsidy Program services are child-centered and family-focused and support the broader objective of strengthening families’ goals of economic self-sufficiency and quality early childhood programs for their children. Participating families may select any legally operating child daycare facility eligible to participate in the program.
To apply for the government childcare voucher program, please use the Common Help Application. You may also print the paper application in English or Spanish and return it to your local Department of Social Services. If you are unable to print the application, you may pick up an application or request that one be mailed to you from your local Department of Social Services. Note: You may be interviewed by a childcare worker. Income verification is required.
