SAF 130 - Industrial Safety - OSHA 10 (1 CR.)
Course Description
Presents an introduction to occupational health and safety and its application in the workplace. Emphasizes safety standards and the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), its rules and regulations (OSHA 10). Lecture 1 hour per week.
General Course Purpose
This course is designed to teach students a wide range of occupational safety and health topics including introduction to Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), common physical and health hazards, and hazard identification in the work place. Students will learn about their rights and responsibilities and gain valuable knowledge about how they can protect themselves and others from hazards in the workplace. When students successfully complete this course, they will receive their OSHA 10- Hour General Industry certification.

Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Discuss the importance of OSHA to workers and worker rights under OSHA
- Explain the fundamentals of common safety and health hazards in the workplace
- List the general requirements for the maintenance of walking/working surfaces
- Identify the importance and basics of chemical safety
- Explain the purpose of Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
- Identify and describe common types of electrocution hazards
- List the different types of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Recognize the situations in which different types of PPE should be used
- Describe the importance of emergency planning and general emergency preparedness
- Define Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
- List preparation guidelines for different emergency situations
- Explain the steps to take to identify, avoid, control, and report fire hazards
- Identify OSHA requirements pertaining to bloodborne pathogens
- Define the terms “ergonomics” and explain the importance of ergonomics
- Define what constitutes workplace violence and recount the consequences of workplace violence
- List controls that can lessen the likelihood of workplace violence
