PHT 264 - Digital Photography (3 CR.)

Course Description

Teaches theory and practice of digital photography. Emphasizes use of digital cameras in studio and on location. Teaches advanced techniques of image editing. Provides training in digital image transmission from remote locations. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

Provide students with hands-on experience using digital cameras.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

 Prerequisites: PHT 101 and ART 283 or PHT 135

Course Objectives

  • shoot using their own digital cameras in a variety of situations
  • edit and output images
  • use digital terminology appropriately

Major Topics to Be Included

  • color management workflow
  • file and image size
  • white balance
  • exposure controls (metering, aperture, shutter)
  • composition, color, focus and point of view as they affect the image
  • shooting in low light, noise reduction
  • downloading to computer and basic file management
  • image editing and adjustment on the computer
  • print and electronic output
  • copyright and ethical issues in digital media
