PHT 235 - Documentary Photography (3 CR.)
Course Description
Teaches students how to create an in-depth documentary photography photo-essay. Covers editing the final project for presentation. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
Teaches students to produce an in-depth documentary photography project. Introduces historical and contemporary topics in narrative and non-narrative documentary photography.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Prerequisite: PHT 102.
Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Produce effective narrative and non-narrative documentary photographs.
- Complete and present a documentary project.
- Conduct research and caption photographs.
- Reference contemporary and historical documentary photography.

- Approaches to documentary photography.
- Editing and sequencing of documentary photographs.
- Background research and caption writing.
- Documentary photography by historical and contemporary photographers.
