PHT 221 - Studio Lighting I (3 CR.)

Course Description

Examines advanced lighting and camera techniques under controlled studio conditions. Includes view camera use, electronic flash, advanced lighting techniques, color temperature and filtration, and lighting ratios. Requires outside shooting. Part I of II. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

The course is designed to give students experience in solving lighting problems using studio lighting techniques. Emphasis is on total control of lighting and composition to create a desired effect. Gain experience solving a variety of lighting problems through class demonstrations, group activities and assignments. This class examines advanced lighting and camera techniques under controlled studio conditions. Includes view camera use, electronic flash, advanced lighting techniques, color temperature and filtration, and lighting ratios. This course will expose students to the various studio applications of photography through the utilization of strobe lighting and other studio equipment. Lectures and studio assignments explore tabletop and portraiture photography. Each student will gain comprehensive hands-on experience in planning and shooting studio photography.

Prerequisites: PHT 102

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • Learn and apply studio lighting techniques
  • Become familiar with and use studio equipment and tools
  • Use electronic flash equipment
  • Become familiar with the used of digital technology as it applies to studio photography
  • Evaluate and critique work using appropriate photography terminology
  • Understand and implement studio lighting and photography workflow
