OCT 205 - Therapeutic Media (2 CR.)
Course Description
Develops proficiency in various crafts used as treatment modalities in occupational therapy. Emphasizes how to analyze, adapt and teach selected activities as well as how to equip and maintain a safe working environment. Lecture 1 hour. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 3 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the key concepts of the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF) and other significant professional terminology as applied to task/activity analysis and synthesis through the use of crafts and other treatment modalities. The course is designed to assist students in gaining the capacity to teach selected activities using a client-centered approach with individuals and/or groups in a safe environment.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Prerequisite: Admission into the OTA program.
Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Articulate the components of the OTPF and the importance of the OTPF to the profession.
- Explain and apply the dynamics and the concepts of occupation and activity including the interaction of areas of occupation, performance skills, performance patterns, context(s) and environments, and client factors. (aligns with 2018 ACOTE standard B.3.2)
- Demonstrate, the ability to analyze activities relative to areas of occupation, performance skills, performance patterns, context(s) and environments, and client factors in order to implement an intervention plan. (aligns with 2018 ACOTE standard B.3.6)
- Articulate the importance of balancing areas of occupation and its influence on the promotion of health, the prevention of disease, illness, and dysfunction for persons, groups, and populations. (aligns with 2018 ACOTE standard B.3.4)
- Articulate the practical considerations and knowledge of the social determinants of health for persons, groups, and populations with or at risk for disabilities and chronic health conditions including the effects of for social injustice, occupational deprivation, and disparity in the receipt of services. (aligns with 2018 ACOTE standard B.1.3)
- Describe the epidemiological factors that impact public health and welfare of populations as related occupational performance and concepts of health and wellness. (aligns with 2018 ACOTE standard B.1.3)
- Utilize effective interviewing skills to gain a client-centered occupational history through reflective listening and building a therapeutic rapport.
- Demonstrate clinical reasoning to address occupation-based interventions, client factors, performance patterns, and performance skills. (aligns with 2018 ACOTE standard B.4.2)
- Effectively perform activity synthesis, including assessing, adapting and modifying the environment, tools, materials, occupations and interventions to meet the client’s changing needs and sociocultural context. (aligns with 2018 ACOTE standard B.4.18)
- Employ teaching and learning principles to instruct and train the client, caregiver, significant others, and/or communities at the level of the audience. (aligns with 2018 ACOTE standard B.4.21)
- Maintain a safe work environment and adhere to the safety precautions of the corresponding setting, scope of practice, and activity.

- Introduction to the OTPF as applied to task/activity analysis and synthesis.
- Introduction to significant professional terminology as related to occupational therapy.
- Interview skills appropriate to gain a client-centered understanding and to gain a therapeutic rapport.
- The dynamic relations of the person, environment, and occupation and how this interaction impacts occupational performance and one’s overall health and wellness.
- Teaching selected activities while maintaining a safe therapeutic environment.
