MUS 288 - Recording Problems Seminar (2 CR.)

Course Description

Provides a seminar setting in which the student may discuss recording problems with commercial music industry professionals. Introduces the student to professional organizations, libraries, and journals common to the recording industry. Lecture 1 hour. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

This course is designed to give the student direct access to professional solutions in the recording field. It is an opportunity where the student may look at a variety of opinion in relation to recording practices and then make application of such practices in a live recording session. Through open discussion, research, and examination of varying techniques, the student will evaluate different methods and make decisions as to actual application in a studio environment. These applications will be the basis for a master recording produced by the student. Course 

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisite is MUS 140 - “Introduction to Recording Techniques” or division approval.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  • compile and evaluate a variety of responses to a given recording problem

  • use professional journals and other reference material in seeking solutions to recording problems

  • present a problem and its solution in a concise verbal and written form to others in the field

  • apply all of the information gained in his or her experience in a work environment and to follow through with good work habits and attention to detail

  • be prepared to work with temperamental “talent”

  • Open seminar discussions with professionals from the engineering and talent side of the recording
  • business
  • Exposure to professional journals and reference materials
  • Basic research and information gathering techniques
  • Experience as a lead engineer during a session and as assistant engineer and studio technician
  • Presenting and defending concepts to others in the industry
  • Working with talent in creating a finished product
