MUS 266 - Advanced String Ensemble (2 CR.)
Course Description
Performs advanced string ensemble repertoire. Studies ensemble techniques and interpretation. May be repeated for credit. Laboratory 6 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
To produce an advanced performing musical ensemble that will meet the ensemble requirements for music majors.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
MUS 166 or permission of instructor. Advanced level musical knowledge and performing experience in violin, viola, cello or double bass. Department permission required.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

Demonstrate through performance an advanced level of musical skills and ability to perform as a contributing and complimentary part of ensemble.

Perform advanced trio, quartet and quintet literature and learn the stylistic differences of the repertoire.

Develop habits and disciplines necessary to improve and progress the musical quality of the works learned.

Perform as an ensemble member in recital.

Play in tune with other instruments in the ensemble.
Major Topics to Be Included
- The study of string ensemble literature designed for trios, quartets and quintets. This may include
- ensemble works that require, as available, an additional instrument such as piano, brass or a
- wind instrument.
- Performance techniques
- Tuning techniques
- Stylistic differences in repertoire
