MUS 239 - Advanced Jazz Ensemble (1 CR.)
Course Description
Consists of performance from Standard Jazz and American Songbook Repertoires, including study of ensemble techniques, interpretation, and improvisation. Continues Jazz Ensemble with additional leadership and responsibilities. Completion of Jazz Ensemble required. May be repeated for credit. Laboratory/Rehearsal 3 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
To produce a performing musical ensemble which will meet the ensemble requirements for music majors and serve the college community through quality performances of jazz music.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Prerequisite: MUS 135
Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:

Sight-read arrangements from the standard jazz repertoire

Perform at least two public concerts

Interpret music from various eras in an appropriate style

Demonstrate leadership skills such as leading the section or completing administrative tasks

Work with other musicians, giving and receiving positive, constructive comments

Build a meaningful improvised solo in a large ensemble context
