MUS 147 - Applied Music Composition (1 CR.)
Course Description
Teaches the fundamentals of music composition, including score notation software. Introduces basic manipulation of melodic and motivic composition devices, conscious use of texture, and basic knowledge of orchestration. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
This course is designed to provide the student with individual instruction in music composition.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
None.
Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Produce scores with music notation software.
- Analyze musical scores from different periods.
- Demonstrate knowledge of transposition, instrument ranges, C clefs, and stylistic traits.
- Demonstrate a basic knowledge of different styles of musical periods with an emphasis on 20th century music and music of the last 20 years.
