MUS 145 - Applied Music - Keyboard (1 CR.)

Course Description

Teaches piano, organ, harpsichord, or synthesizer. Studies the standard repertoire. Students may take a one-half hour lesson for one credit per week per semester. All courses in applied music may be repeated one time. Music majors may repeat these courses up to 8 hours. 1 half-hour lessons per week, 4 hours practice (laboratory) required.

General Course Purpose

Students taking applied keyboard lessons will develop markedly improved keyboard technique (including hand and arm posture, fingering and music reading), basic knowledge of hand physiology and health, and an increasing repertoire of standard keyboard literature appropriate and suitable for audition and public performance.

None.

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • Recognize pitch notation in both treble and bass clef
  • Recall fingering concepts at the beginning level
  • Recognize and perform rhythm notation
  • Reproduce learned skills to learn a new piece without coaching
  • Recall the correct physical approach to the instrument for better technical control and comfort
  • Sight read at the primer level
