MDL 277 - Clinical Blood Banking Techniques (4 CR.)
Course Description
Provides training in techniques, procedures, and interpretations in Blood Banking in a clinical laboratory or simulated laboratory setting. Clinical 12 hours a week.
General Course Purpose
This course will give the student an opportunity to perform and interpret routine blood banking procedures.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
- Students must be enrolled in the second year of the Medical Laboratory Technology AAS degree program or receive program director approval.
- Prerequisites: MDL 215 and MDL 216 with a grade of āCā or better.
Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Perform typing and compatibility of blood within a reasonable length of time
- Demonstrate safe operation of blood bank instruments including routine start-up, reagent preparation, and preventive maintenance.
- Keep accurate records of all procedures performed in the blood bank
- Identify normal antibodies using the procedures available
- Demonstrate ability to solve problems resulting from blood incompatibilities
- Participate in quality assurance
- Demonstrate confidence in their ability to perform routine blood banking procedures.
- Select and release correct blood products based on type and condition.
