MDL 196 - On Site Training (2 CR.)

Course Description

Specializes in career orientation and training program without pay in selected businesses and industry, supervised and coordinated by the college.  Includes performing routine phlebotomy and urinalysis procedures, and operation of related instruments in a clinical and/or on-campus laboratory setting for a total of 64 hours. Credit/work ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours. May be repeated for credit. Variable hours.

General Course Purpose

To provide students with the theory and technique essential for the proper collection, handling processing, and analyzing of, select laboratory blood and body fluid specimen in an accredited clinical laboratory.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Students entering this course must have a “C” or better grade in MDL 100, MDL 140, a “C” or better grade at the midpoint of MDL 130 and MDL 260 and be enrolled in the Medical Laboratory Assistant CSC program or receive program director approval.

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • Collect blood specimens by both venipuncture and dermal puncture with 80% success
  • Demonstrate the proper approach to both in-patients and outpatients when collecting specimens.
  • Demonstrate the correct procedures for collection, distribution and preservation of all laboratory specimens encountered
  • Perform accurate labeling of specimens and recording of results.
  • Demonstrate an attitude of concerned patient care.
  • Perform qualitative and semi-quantitative chemical tests on urine.
  • Perform microscopic urinalysis, identifying all constituents present
  • Correlate abnormal urinary findings with disease conditions.
  • Discuss the performance and calculation of quality control.
  • Describe the biological principles of pregnancy testing.
  • Perform slide and tube pregnancy tests as workload permits.
  • Describe the procedure for collection and processing 24 hour urine specimens.
  • Demonstrate initiative and ability to cooperate with the laboratory staff.
