MDL 105 - Phlebotomy (3 CR.)
Course Description
Introduces basic medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, components of health care delivery and clinical laboratory structure. Teaches techniques of specimen collection, specimen handling, and patient interactions.
Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
To provide students with the theory and technique essential for the proper collection and handling of laboratory specimens.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Students must have completed or qualify for ENG 111. Students must be accepted and program placed into the Phlebotomy CSC program, Medical Laboratory Assistant CSC program or receive program director approval.
Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Identify hospital health care providers and departments
- Describe the organizational structure of the clinical laboratory
- Define routinely used medical terminology
- Discuss body systems and anatomical regions and relate them to pathological conditions
- Assemble equipment for specimen collection
- Demonstrate knowledge of infection control and safety
- Apply principles of quality assessment to specimen collection and point-of-care testing
- Demonstrate proper patient and staff interpersonal relationships
- Describe the collection and labeling of specimens.
- Perform collection of blood specimens by venipuncture and dermal puncture.
