INT 234 - English-to-ASL Interpretation II (3-4 CR.)
Course Description
Perform simultaneous interpretations of monologues in the source language (English) into the target language (ASL). Process an incoming English monologue while simultaneously producing an appropriate interpretation in ASL. Conduct research in the field of interpretation. Apply tem interpreting techniques. Interact with consumers of interpretation. Lecture 2 hrs. Laboratory 2 hrs. Total 4 hrs/wk.
General Course Purpose
This course builds upon the skills learned in Expressive Interpreting I. Completion of this course will qualify students to take the Voice to Sign Interpretation part of the Virginia Quality Assurance Screening for Interpreters.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Prerequisites: INT 133 & INT 134.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- identify and demonstrate strategies to appropriately interpret from English to ASL
- simultaneously interpret simple cold source messages and more complex warm source messages.
- produce a culturally and linguistically accurate simultaneous interpretation of a message approximately ten minutes
- understand appropriate process models
- videotape interpretation and apply appropriate process models for self-analysis of the work.
- demonstrate appropriate feeding techniques while working with team interpreters
