INT 105 - Interpreting Foundations I (3 CR.)

Course Description

Develops fundamental skills of interpreting, including cognitive processes and intralingual language development in English and ASL. Reviews Process Models of interpreting, and uses one to analyze interpretations. Develops feedback skills essential to the team interpreting process. Part I of II. Lecture 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

Interpreters must have strong processing skills and strong English skills in order to perform the many mental tasks required when interpreting.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisites: ASL 201, ASL 261 or permission of instructor

Course Objectives

Upon the completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Explain various process models of interpretation.
  • List the component tasks within the process of interpreting.
  • Perform individual performance tasks in English.
  • Determine individual strengths and weaknesses within the cognitive process of interpretation.
  • Determine individual strengths and weaknesses with use of the English language.
  • Identify techniques which will strengthen skills.
  • Discuss team interpreting processes.
