IDS 250 - Green Design for Interior Designers (3 CR.)

Course Description

Introduces interior design solutions that support the environment and can be utilized in new and existing structures. Includes the principles of Green Design and steps in producing design solutions using natural and toxin free materials. Covers material sources, interior finishes, furnishings and lighting and their applications.

Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

This course is designed for students who are interested in designing environmentally sustainable residential interiors.

Course Prerequisites/Co-requisites Prerequisite IDS 100, 105, 106, 105, 206.

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • Research new and existing materials to determine their value in a sustainable interior
  • Evaluate materials used in interiors based on their environmental impact and life cycle cost
  • Create an interior using sustainable materials
  • Be able to discuss and share ideas and new findings related to this ever changing topic

  • Role of interior designers in designing sustainable environments
  • Evaluation of interior materials based on product labeling
  • LEED (Leadership and Energy and Environmental Design) for Homes and CI (Commercial Interiors)
  • Design of interior spaces using sustainable principles
  • Health implications of interior materials
