IDS 205 - Materials and Sources (3 CR.)

Course Description

Presents textiles, floor and wall coverings, and window treatments. Emphasizes construction, fiber, finish, and code applications. May use research and field trips to trade sources representing these elements. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

This course focuses on textiles and finish materials used in residential and commercial interiors. Students collect a “database” of current fibers, fabrics and finish materials and use the internet to research interior materials and design textiles.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisites: IDS 100 and IDS 105.

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • Select appropriate textiles and finish materials for a variety of project types.
  • Utilize the internet to search for new materials and obtain specification information, and to evaluate the information available on a web site.
  • Identify local resources and manufacturer representatives for textiles and materials
  • Practice knowledge through class assignments including the development of a materials binder and a design project.
