HRT 266 - Advanced Floral Design (3 CR.)

Course Description

Teaches skills required for composition of traditional and contemporary floral designs. Includes use of exotic flowers to create arrangement styles such as Japanese, European, and Williamsburg floral designs. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

This course helps students develop the skills and understand the theory of design practiced by commercial florists and advanced floral designers.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisite: HRT 260 Introduction to Floral Design or instructor’s approval. Functional literacy in the English language

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course students should be able to:

  • Identify and select plant materials, containers, supplies and equipment for various types of floral designs.
  • Establish the monetary value of floral arrangements.
  • Create a floral design using flowers and foliages they have preserved.
  • Construct a permanent arrangement
  • Design an arrangement in the oriental style
  • Design an arrangement using one of the following European floral design techniques; Parallel System, New Convention, Landscape and Biedermeier.
  • Loose flowers arranged in a vase
  • Design a simple boutonniere, corsage and wedding bouquet
