HRT 245 - Woody Plants (3 CR.)

Course Description

Studies identification, culture, and uses of woody plants in landscaping, including deciduous and evergreen, native and cultivated trees, shrubs, vines and ground covers. Teaches scientific and common names of plants. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

This course is designed to provide the student with the principles of identification and culture of commonly grown woody ornamental plants.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Students should be able to read at the college level.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course students should be able to correctly:

• Identify a minimum of 120 woody ornamental plants according to genus, species, and common name.
• List the general cultural preferences for these plants.
• Select plants likely to successfully grow under diverse outdoor environmental conditions.
• Use a key to identify an unknown plant.
• Describe general cultural practices used to promote the health of woody plants.
