HRT 202 - Landscape Plants II (3 CR.)

Course Description

Studies landscape use of plants. Considers ornamental value, growth habit, identification, and limitations. Part II of II. Part II of II. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

This course provides the student with the fundamental principles of identification, selection, culture and uses of relevant plants. Considers ornamental value, growth habit, identification, and limitations.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

None

NOTE: HRT 201 and 202 do not need to be taken sequentially.

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

• Recognize and identify a minimum of 150 commonly grown trees, shrubs, perennial herbaceous, annual, biennial and indoor ornamental plants;
• Identify these plants according to Family, Scientific name (Genus, specific epithet, variety and/or subspecies), cultivar if appropriate and Common Name;
• Describe form, size, cultural requirements, pests, maintenance practices, peculiarities; and
• Relate general morphological characteristics of plant materials covered in this course; and
• Recommend specific plants for various landscape situations.
