HRT 160 - Applied Mathematics for the Green Industry (2 CR.)
Course Description
Covers the basic math skills needed in the Green Industry to include areas, volumes, calibration calculations, profit and loss statements, and topics specific to turf, landscape, greenhouse, nursery, and interior landscapes. Lecture 2 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
This course covers the wide variety of essential basic math-related topics that are needed by horticulturists and landscape professionals.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
None.
Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Calculate areas and volumes of landscape features
- Calibrate equipment
- Calculate fertilizer applications
- Read a profit and loss statement
Major Topics to Be Included
- Review of basic math skills (fractions, decimals, exponents, scientific notation, ratio and proportion)
- Measurement and calculations with measured values
- Geometry
- Calculating the area of landscape features
- Fertilizer calculation
- Pesticides and plant growth regulator calculations
- Calibration of application equipment
- Specific applications for turf, landscape maintenance, design/build, nursery production, greenhouse production and interior landscape
- Reading a profit and Loss statement and understanding its function
