HRT 121 - Greenhouse Crop Production I (3 CR.)
Course Description
Covers commercial practices related to production of floriculture crops. Considers production requirements, environmental control and management, and cultural techniques. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total 4 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
This course provides the student with the essential cultural principles and practices related to commercial production of greenhouse crops. Students will also gain practical experience by growing typical examples of such crops in the college greenhouses.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Functional literacy in the English language and basic math skills.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course students should be able to:
- Describe safety precautions in the use, selection, handling, and application of horticultural equipment and chemicals related to greenhouse crop production.
- Correctly describe the cultural requirements for the major crops grown under greenhouse conditions.
- Identify and describe the common insect and disease pests and their control as they relate to greenhouse crops.
- Grow certain kinds of pot plant crops in the college greenhouses.
- Discuss marketing and contract growing.
- Explain how to choose greenhouses, equipment and supplies.
- Describe careers in greenhouse crop production.
