HLT 220 - Concepts of Disease (3 CR.)
Course Description
Emphasizes general principles, classifications, causes, and treatments of selected disease processes. Intended primarily for students enrolled in health technology programs. Lecture 3 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to educate students enrolled in health technology programs and others about the common diseases processes in humans. The course will cover the most common infectious and non- infectious diseases in the US. The course will also relate the disease to their socioeconomic impact and government regulation.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
All students should have a background in anatomy and physiology or human biology. Familiarity with Medical Terminology is helpful, but not required.
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Differentiate between acute and chronic disease.
- Distinguish between infectious and non-infectious disease.
- Discuss disease prevention, screening and risk assessment.
- Apply the concept of infection transmission and control to specific disease states.
- Discuss the concepts of disease management.
- Describe terminology related to diseases.
- Apply epidemiological concepts of incidence, risk and surveillance.
- Discuss concepts of infection transmission and control.
- Discuss treatment options for common acute, chronic, infectious and non-infectious diseases and conditions.
