HIM 249 - Supervision and Management Practices for Him (3 CR.)
Course Description
Introduces supervision and management principles with emphasis on the application of these principles in the health information setting. Lecture 3 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
This course is designed to permit the student to apply management theory to a variety of problems that commonly occur in a health care setting and also to develop an understanding of financial management concepts.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Prerequisites/corequisites are BIO 142, HIM 110, HIM 130, HIM 141, HIM 142, HIM 220, HIM 226, HIM 250, HIM 260, HIM 229, HIM 230 or permission of instructor. The course will be offered to any student who meets the prerequisites/co-requisites and is program placed in the Health Information Management (HIM) program.
Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Analyze foundational and contemporary theories of management and leadership and evaluate their application in healthcare organizations.
- Examine the influence of management and leadership theories on health information management (HIM) functions and workforce dynamics.
- Differentiate between various leadership styles and powers and assess their relevance to HIM environments.
- Apply the principles of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling to the role of an HIM manager.
- Assess management levels and their responsibilities within healthcare institutions.
- Evaluate tools such as dashboards and scorecards for managerial decision-making and performance monitoring.
- Explore ethical considerations and effective strategies for managing in-person and virtual meetings in HIM settings.
- Analyze the structure and effectiveness of team dynamics, including virtual team environments.
- Apply motivational theories and techniques to enhance workforce morale and departmental sustainability in HIM.
- Interpret the fiscal responsibilities of HIM managers, including budgeting, variance analysis, and financial planning.
- Distinguish between budgeting types and explain their role in strategic and operational planning.
- Design a departmental budget using financial tools and principles.
- Develop an understanding of strategic planning, organizational development, and innovation in healthcare.
- Evaluate change management strategies, stages of adoption, and the role of change agents.
- Analyze conflict management styles and their effectiveness in facilitating organizational change.
- Examine key employment laws including Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) as they relate to HIM.
- Evaluate best practices in hiring, interviewing, dismissal procedures, and progressive discipline in compliance with legal standards.
- Conduct job analyses and develop job descriptions aligned with evolving HIM roles and responsibilities.
- Integrate job design with organizational policies and performance oversight mechanisms.
- Evaluate human resource strategies for recruiting, selecting, and retaining HIM professionals.
- Analyze compensation and benefits practices that influence workforce stability and satisfaction in HIM departments.
- Apply performance management tools including appraisals, performance improvement plans, and self-evaluation processes.
- Conduct effective appraisal interviews to enhance employee development and department outcomes.
- Design and evaluate training and orientation programs tailored to HIM roles and emerging industry needs.
