ESL 58 - Writing Workshop II (5 CR.)

Course Description

Provides an intensive writing seminar for students struggling with the writing process, editing, and self-correction in academic English. Helps students improve their fluency and command of American academic English. Credits are not applicable toward graduation. Lecture 5 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

This course is designed to help students improve their college-level writing skills and become more accurate and efficient writers. The course emphasizes composing, organizing, revising, and editing, as well as mechanics, structural patterns, grammar, and idioms. The goal of this course is to prepare students for the rigor of academic college courses by giving students the necessary writing strategies to succeed in such courses.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Requires teacher recommendation from ESL 51. Corequisite: ESL 52

Course Objectives

Goal 1 - Students will be able to write a fully developed academic essay that demonstrates readiness for ENG 111 – College Composition I.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • Write a composition that maintains a focus on a unifying idea.
  • Develop ideas with relevant supporting details.
  • Demonstrate understanding of paragraphing, transitions, and organizational patterns.
  • Use grammatically correct sentences, using a variety of structures.
  • Detect grammar errors and correct them.
  • Use appropriate rhetorical elements (organization, coherence, unity, logical ordering).

Major Topics to Be Included

  • Students will write various types of essays, including problem/solutions and arguments.
  • In addition, students will work on developing summaries and responses to readings and will learn how to incorporate research into their writing.
