ENG 212 - Creative Writing II (3 CR.)

Course Description

Introduces students to the fundamentals of writing imaginatively. Student will write in forms selected from poetry, fiction, drama, essays and/or creative nonfiction.

Lecture 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

Improves and focuses students’ knowledge of, and creativity in, various literary genres.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Course Prerequisites/Co-requisites Students must have successfully passed ENG 112 or ENG 125 or division approval.

Course Objectives

GOAL ONE: LEARNING BASIC ELEMENTS AND TECHNIQUES

Students will continue to learn the elements and techniques fundamental to the craft of writing poetry, fiction, drama, and/or creative nonfiction. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • understand and identify the standard terms that describe elements and techniques of creative writing and
  • apply their understanding of basic terms and techniques to their writing and the writing of others.

GOAL TWO: WRITING SKILLS

Students will continue to develop their writing skills in engaging the creative imagination. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate an understanding of effective strategies in the writing process, including planning, drafting, revising and polishing of texts, and
  • demonstrate effective writing strategies, with special emphasis on techniques in a particular genre.

GOAL THREE: UNDERSTANDING THE ROLE OF CRITICISM

Students will deepen their understanding of the role of feedback from readers in various settings, such as the workshop. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • give and receive feedback insightfully and constructively.

GOAL FOUR: READING CRITICALLY

Students will continue to improve their ability to read texts from the perspective of the writer. By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • analyze professional and student texts for their use of genre-specific techniques and
  • describe style of writing in professional and student texts.
