EMS 170 - Als Internship I (1 CR.)

Course Description

Begins the first in a series of clinical experiences providing supervised direct patient contact in appropriate patient care facilities in and out of hospitals. Includes but not limited to patient care units such as the Emergency Department, Critical Care units, Pediatric, Labor and Delivery, Operating Room, Trauma centers and various advanced life support units. Laboratory 3-6 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

Clinical education represents the most important component of advanced life support education since this is where students learn to synthesize cognitive and psychomotor skills. Clinical education integrates and reinforces the didactic and skills portion of the curriculum. Clinical education is completed under the direct supervision of a clinical preceptor.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisite: EMT/B Certification Co-requisites: EMS 151 

Course Objectives

After successful completion of the course, students will be capable of performing the following functions:

• safely administer medications
• safely perform endotrachael intubations
• safely gain venous access in all age groups
• effectively ventilate un-intubated patients of all age groups
• perform a comprehensive assessment on pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients
• perform a comprehensive assessment on obstetrical, trauma, and psychiatric patients
• perform a comprehensive assessment, formulate, and implement a treatment plan for patients with chest pain, dyspnea/respiratory difficulty, syncope, abdominal complaints, and altered mental status
