EDU 206 - Classroom and Behavioral Management (3 CR.)

Course Description

Provides an overview of developing a positive and inclusive learning environment. Emphasizes methods for managing the diverse needs of students in order to promote a positive learning environment. Addresses how to establish and communicate expectations for effective instruction.

Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

EDU 206 provides teachers with context and tools for developing and maintaining a positive learning environment.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisite: EDU 200.

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

Foundations of Classroom Management

  • Describe research-based classroom and behavior management techniques, classroom community building, positive behavior supports, and individual interventions, including techniques that promote emotional well-being and teach and maintain behavioral conduct and skills consistent with norms, standards, and rules of the educational environment.
  • Describe historical trends in classroom management.
  • Explain variables that impact student behavior and learning.

Meeting the Needs of All Students

  • Identify diverse approaches to classroom management based upon behavioral, cognitive, affective, social and ecological theory and practice.
  • Explain how diversity influences the dynamics of a class.
  • Describe characteristics of a classroom that are reflective of all students.
  • Identify factors that may negatively impact student success in the classroom.
  • Discuss the role of Response-to-Intervention in effectively managing a classroom

Classroom Communities

  • List and reflect on strategies for culturally sensitive communication.
  • Describe strategies for effectively listening to students.
  • Analyze the importance of establishing positive, supportive and professional relationships with students.
  • Explain the process for developing a classroom community.
  • List strategies for communicating effectively with parents.

Managing the Learning Environment

  • Differentiate between behavior, misbehavior, and discipline.
  • Describe how to establish a classroom learning environment at the beginning of the school year to promote positive student behavior.
  • Develop classroom rules, routines and structures.
  • Create a classroom management plan.

Positive Behavior Interventions for Schools and Classrooms

  • Identify professionally-appropriate practices that promote positive redirection of behavior, development of social skills and of self-discipline.
  • Describe positive behavior supports and interventions.
  • Explain how to use language to positively reinforce student behavior.
  • Describe how to effectively respond to minor misbehaviors.

Self-Regulation & Goal Setting

  • Describe how to conduct an effective class meeting.
  • Identify techniques to hold students accountable and promote self-discipline.
  • Describe the steps for goal setting. 

Instructional Planning to Promote Positive Behaviors

  • Describe student academic needs that impact behavior.
  • Analyze instructional strategies to increase student involvement.
  • Explain how to incorporate cooperative learning into instruction.
  • Create a differentiated lesson plan.

School Safety Plans

  • Describe various school crisis management and safety plans.
