CST 241 - Introduction to Directing I (3 CR.)
Course Description
Introduces theory and practice of stage direction through the study of directing methods as well as the execution and discussion of directing exercises. Lecture 2 hours per week. Laboratory 2 hours per week. Total 4 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
Fosters the basic understanding of a theatrical director’s role and responsibilities. CST241 will emphasize text analysis, directing exercises, and assigned readings to inform scene work that places a strong emphasis on ‘present’ behavior, clear story-telling and visceral intention.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Prerequisites: CST 131 or instructor permission. Fluency in Standard American English; recommend proficiency in reading and writing at English 111 level.
Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Examine the text within a theatrical frame work
- Create a unified production concept
- Demonstrate an effective rehearsal process
- Analyze a successful production process
- Assist actors with developing diverse and dynamic characters
- Illustrate the director’s responsibility to the playwright and the text
- Create innovative, interesting, and purposeful movement on stage
