CHD 164 - Working with Infants and Toddlers in Inclusive Settings (3 CR.)

Course Description

Examines developmental and behavioral principles and practices and how these provide the most developmentally suitable curriculum and learning environment for very young children. Includes working with very young children with typical development, as well as those who are gifted, or have developmental delays or disabilities. Lecture 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

To prepare the early childhood educator to work effectively with infants and toddlers, some of whom may be challenged in their physical, cognitive, language, social or behavioral development.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Functional literacy in the English language; reading at the 12th grade level.

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • Discuss the federal legislation that provides for early intervention and prevention services.
  • Describe patterns of child development, including similarities and differences among children.
  • Explain how to set up and maintain an appropriate environment for inclusive care of very young children.
  • Explain the importance of addressing individual needs when working with young children.
  • Practice techniques in working with families and other professionals in systems of intervention and services for very young children.
  • Identify and apply appropriate learning standards as they relate to early childhood education.

  • Early intervention, federal laws, and public policy.
  • Typical and atypical development in young children.
  • Identification processes for special needs in young children.
  • Documentation and planning for inclusion of young children with special needs.
  • Implementing an inclusive early childhood program in home or center-based setting.
  • Choosing appropriate materials and activities to meet individual needs.
  • Finding and using appropriate resources to support children and families.
  • Working with agencies/specialists delivering services to young children.
