BLD 149 - Carpentry I (3 CR.)

Course Description

Presents an introduction to carpentry, with an emphasis on residential/light construction. Introduces basic carpentry terminology. Covers identification and proper use of hand and power tools common to the industry, construction materials, construction techniques, safety precautions, working drawings, and the team approach to construction. Lecture 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

To introduce the student to the language and general concepts of residential/light construction, enabling them to effectively participate in a carpentry crew.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

The student should have the ability to work with whole numbers, common fractions, and measurement. The student should also have the ability to read basic construction text. The student must have basic verbal communication skills and basic problem solving.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • use appropriate safety precautions on a construction site
  • understand basic carpentry terminology and techniques
  • demonstrate a knowledge level that will enable them to work productively in a typical carpentry crew
