BLD 110 - Introduction to Construction (3 CR.)

Course Description

Introduces use of tools and equipment, with emphasis on construction safety, including personal and tool safety. Provides a working introduction to basic blueprint reading and fundamentals of construction mathematics. Lecture 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

To provide student with the basic knowledge and requirements needed in the construction trades.

None.

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to

  • conduct himself in a safe and responsible manner, recognize warning symbols and hazard areas, know what to do if safety measures must be applied.
  • ‌recognize various hand tools, know how to properly handle tools, understand their functions.
  • ‌recognize basic power tools, know how to properly handle power tools, understand their function.
  • ‌read a tape measure, add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers, convert decimals to fractions.
  • ‌use blueprints as a guide for building, recognize symbols and abbreviations, know how to scale drawings.
