ART 271 - Printmaking I Illustrators (3 CR.)

Course Description

Introduces the student to the full range of printmaking techniques. Includes woodcut, silkscreen, etching, and lithography. Provides historical perspective on printmaking. Part I of II. Lecture 2 hours. Studio instruction 3 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

To introduce the student to the processes, tools, and materials of woodcut, silkscreen, etching, and lithography. as well as apply concepts and media importance to the development of the student’s own work.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisites: Basic drawing skills.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of the major processes of woodcut, silkscreen, etching and lithography.
  • Demonstrate a creative and self-critical approach in developing prints.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the relationships between class work and the art of the past and present.
  • Develop an individualized awareness of the relationship between concept, techniques and media in printmaking.

Major Topics to Be Included

  • Brief history of printing as an art form.
  • Etching techniques including, aquatint, line etching, soft ground, and sugar lift.
  • Lithography techniques including, crayon, pencil, touché wash.
  • Woodcut techniques including, engraving and reduction printing.
  • Silkscreen techniques including, frame construction, stencil creation, ink modification. 

Optional Topics

Specific assignments may be made to introduce the student to the concepts and methods used in solving illustrative problems.
