ART 244 - Watercolor II (3 CR.)
Course Description
Presents abstract and representational painting in watercolor with emphasis on design, color, composition, technique and value. Lecture 1 hours. Studio instruction 3 hours. Total 4 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
This class explores continued development in the art of watercolor painting. Artistic concepts pertaining to the medium will be covered, including: transparency, value, basic color theory, and composition. A fundamental, hands-on working knowledge of the medium and equipment will be addressed. Emphasis will be on problem-solving, skill building, and helping students discover their own personal style. Specific techniques will be addressed to help students make decisions and work through and complete paintings.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Prerequisite: ART 243. Students must have basic watercolor skills and techniques.
Course Objectives
- Process, exploration, painting technique in contemporary watercolor materials - Continue to explore material possibilities, technique and various application methods; gain greater understanding of watercolor materials and confidence in using them effectively.
- Color mixing and color theory - Enhance the ability to mix colors on a palette and directly apply to painting or through glazing. Utilize color theory in composition.
- Critical analysis - Enhance familiarity and confidence with studio critique practice for talking/writing about art works.
- Finished Paintings - Create a group of artworks that are the culmination of your learning about contemporary watercolor materials and techniques and that are authentic and intentional in all aspects - paintings that only you could make in only the way you could make them.
- Model watercolor artist practice - Mentor Watercolor 1 (ART 243) students in critiques and discussions when possible, guiding them toward the proper use of watercolor materials and tools, color mixing and color theory. Model appropriate studio and critique practices by supporting and challenging their peers.

- Use of various experimental watercolor techniques.
- Development of more compositional stylistic images.
- Compilation of a portfolio of water colors.
