ART 243 - Watercolor I (3 CR.)

Course Description

Presents abstract and representational painting in watercolor with emphasis on design, color, composition, technique and value. Lecture 1 hours. Studio instruction 3 hours. Total 4 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

The courses will provide lecture and studio instruction on the fundamentals, practices and related concepts of watercolor painting. The course is an elective for Visual Arts students.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisite: ART 131, knowledge of basic 2D design skills.

Course Objectives

  • Explore material possibilities, technique and various application methods to gain greater understanding of watercolor materials and confidence in using them effectively.
  • Demonstrate the ability to mix colors on a palette and directly apply to painting or through glazing.
  • Execute works using color theory in composition.
  • Create a body of artwork utilizing knowledge of contemporary watercolor materials and techniques and that are authentic and intentional.
  • Utilize media-specific terminology to critique and evaluate works of art, demonstrating criticism and self-analysis.

  • Brush use/techniques, paint mixing and set-up
  • Flat washes (even and graded tones)
  • Layering and glazing
  • Still life
  • Landscape (including architectural and/or water elements)
  • Interiors
  • Animal forms
  • Portraiture
