ART 242 - Painting II (3 CR.)

Course Description

Introduces abstract and representational painting in acrylic and/or oil with emphasis on color, composition, and value. Possible field trip. Lecture 1 hours. Studio instruction 4 hours. Total 5 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

Continues lecture and studio instruction on the fundamentals, practices and related concepts of oil painting. The course is an elective for Visual Arts students.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisite: ART 121-122 or divisional permission.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • Distinguish and render value, hue and intensity as they relate to the visual aspects of form, texture and space.
  • Execute works by manipulating the paint medium in purposeful and intuitive manner, exploring various approaches and methods such as underpainting, grisaille, glazing, direct color matching/mixing, Plein Air/Impressionist and fat to lean.
  • Demonstrate the ability to place imagery within the framework of the picture plane, as well as an understanding of various design concepts.
  • Create appropriate surfaces for painting from various materials such as paper, canvas, and wood panel.
  • Utilize media-specific terminology to critique and evaluate works of art, demonstrating criticism and self-analysis.

Major Topics to Be Included

  • Review of skills from ART 241 in paint medium
  • Representational, underpainting, Post-Impressionist, Fauvist/Expressionist and Cubist/Abstraction techniques
  • Emphasis on the manipulation & properties oil (or acrylic) medium
  • Still-life, nude model (head and torso) and landscape genres
