ART 241 - Painting I (3 CR.)
Course Description
Introduces abstract and representational painting in acrylic and/or oil with emphasis on color, composition, and value. Possible field trip. Lecture 1 hours. Studio instruction 4 hours. Total 5 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to increase the ability to investigate and experiment with visual communication in painting, as well as apply established theories, concepts and media importance to the development of the student's own art.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Prerequisite: ART 121-122 or divisional permission.
Course Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of basic materials of painting and their proper use preparation and preservation.
- Develop working habits that eliminate waste of time and materials
- Establish a painter's vocabulary
- Demonstrate knowledge of composition, color and unity
- Master presentation of finished work, including framing and displaying
Major Topics to Be Included
- Introduction to materials and tools
- Stretching and priming at least one canvas
- Fundamentals such as color, shape, texture, balance, value, rhythm, etc., in regard to composition
- Color theory (color wheel, shade/tint, warm/cool, monochromatic, limited palette, etc.)
- Pre-painting prep; compositional thumbnail sketching with pencil and paper
- Laying in the paint including such methods/techniques as impasto, scumbling, glazing, collage, canvas tinting, layering, mixed media, etc.
- Still life, landscape, model, portraits, non-objective, etc.
- Research into realism, abstraction, surrealism, fantasy, etc.
- Presentation of finished work; frame and displaying
- Outside assignments, one being the final presentation on exam day
