Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background.
I was born in New England and eventually moved to Virginia, living first in Reston and then in Arlington. I’ve spent most of my life in the D.C. area and graduated from Yorktown High School in Arlington.

Currently, I’m taking classes part-time at NOVA while also running my own business restoring and selling properties.

This past winter, I began reflecting on my passions and how I could continue my education. I had already earned a degree from NOVA, so returning felt like a natural choice.

I’ve discovered that I have a love for communication, art, photography, and video—skills that even complement my work in real estate. As an older returning student, I’ve learned that it’s never too late to reinvent yourself.

What brought you to NOVA?
I had a challenging upbringing and felt lost for much of my early life. I was navigating my personal struggles while finding my own path. That’s what led me to NOVA. Initially, I pursued the science program because of my passion for the environment. I earned my associate degree in science from NOVA in 2008.

Then my father suddenly passed away, which served as a big reality check and shifted my view on life. This compelled me to take on more responsibility and mature into an adult. Now I’m in my second semester of the Photography and Media program, and I’m ready for a change!

What are you studying?
I’m currently studying photography and media. I plan on completing my associate degree at the end of 2025 or early 2026.

Tell us about your experience at NOVA (i.e., professors you’ve liked and friends you’ve met).
I’m incredibly impressed with the professors in NOVA’s art program, particularly Professor Aya Takashima. As the co-chair of the Photography and Media department, she teaches many of the photography courses at NOVA’s Alexandria Campus. Professor Aya has been the most positive influence for me, and she’s a key part of the program’s success.

I would also like to give credit to professors Tom Paradis and Page Carr in the Fine Arts department at NOVA’s Alexandria Campus. They too have had a big impact on my journey in the Photography and Media program. Additionally, Professor Liz Donadio has been an invaluable anchor for the Photography and Media program at NOVA’s Woodbridge Campus.

We’re fortunate to be in Northern Virginia, where there are so many opportunities. NOVA is a great place to explore new paths, whether you’re younger or older. Through the photography club and the art community, I’ve met wonderful people, both in and outside of class. I’ve also had the privilege of photographing events for NOVA, including the MEC’s 20th anniversary celebration and the 2024 S.E.A.L. Awards.

What would you tell a student coming to NOVA?
I would tell new students to follow their passions when choosing a degree program. I would also tell them to seek guidance from counselors, professors, and department heads—they can offer insights you might not see yourself. Be mindful of your academic record and balancing your course load with life’s responsibilities. Start with one or two classes to find a manageable pace.

NOVA offers incredible opportunities and outstanding professors. It’s a place where people from all sorts of backgrounds can thrive and contribute to the community. NOVA helps everyone shine.

Enjoy the experience and the community at NOVA, as everything you learn will benefit you. Get involved in campus life as much as possible. Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it—NOVA has endless resources to support every student.

Where do you see yourself after NOVA, or what career pursuits are you exploring?
I see a bright and successful future. I plan to apply what I’ve learned in the Photography and Media program to enhance my current business.

My ultimate goal, however, is to successfully pivot into a new career in photography, broadcasting, media, or journalism. Taking it one step at a time, I’m excited about moving into a media-related field thanks to NOVA’s guidance and support.
