Borrow, Renew, Request


Borrowing Materials

Students, Faculty & Staff: Your NOVACard serves as your library card and is required to check out materials. For more information about the NOVACard, see the NOVACard website.

Members of the Public: You may obtain an Community Patron card for limited borrowing privileges from any NOVA campus library. For more information, see Library Policies.

Loan Periods: The standard loan period for books and DVDs is three weeks. Some items have restricted loan periods. For more information, please contact a campus library

Borrowing Limits: The following table contains the maximum number of items that any student, faculty member, staff member, or community patron can have on loan at any time.

Intercampus Loans: Many library materials can be sent from one campus to another. Click on the Requesting tab above for instructions on how to request an item from another campus.

Interlibrary Loans: Some campus libraries provide interlibrary loan services to students. For more information, please contact a campus library.  


Renewing Materials

You can renew items before they are overdue as long as they have not been requested by someone else. You can renew items at your local campus library or online by following the instructions below.

  1. On the Libraries home page, on the Books & eBooks tab, under the search box, click on the My Account link.

  2. Sign in with your MyNOVA username and password.

  3. Click on the Loans tab.

  4. To renew an individual item, click on the Renew link next to that item.

  5. To renew all items, click on the Renew All link.

Requesting Materials

You can request that items be sent from one campus library to another by following the instructions below. It usually takes two to four business days for requested items to arrive at their destination. When an item is ready to be checked out, you will receive an email in your myNOVA email account.

  1. Search the library catalog by using the search box on the Books & eBooks tab on the Libraries home page.

  2. On the results page, click on the Sign in link.

  3. On the sign in page, enter your MyNOVA username and password

  4. Find the item that you want to request.

  5. Click on the Available at… link.

  6. On the next page, in the Request Item section, click on the Request link.

  7. Complete the form.
  8. Click on the Request link in the bottom right corner of the form.

GMU Privileges

As a NOVA student you have borrowing privileges at George Mason's libraries. To check items out you must have a valid NOVACard and a copy of your registration for the current semester. For more information, visit the GMU Circulation webpage; scroll down to the section labeled "NVCC."
