Sick Leave for VSDP Participants

Sick leave for employees covered under VSDP is advanced each year, does not accrue and is not payable upon termination of employment. Your total months of career state service and whether you are full-time or part-time determine how much VSDP sick leave you receive. See VSDP Handbook for leave advancement guidelines.

Traditional Sick Leave

The Traditional Sick Leave program is available to full and part-time salaried faculty members who enrolled in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP) or opt out of the VSDP. Participants earn five hours of sick leave each pay period. Leave of up to 48 hours can be used for a family member.

Family and Personal Leave for VSDP Participants

VSDP participants receive up to 40 hours of family and personal leave in addition to sick leave. This leave can be used for personal reasons including illness or injury. How much family and personal leave you receive is determined by your total months of career state service. See VSDP Handbook for leave advancement guidelines.

Parental Leave

NOVA provides eligible faculty and classified employees 8 weeks of paid parental leave to care for and bond with a newborn or child under the age of eighteen (18), newly-placed for adoption or for foster or custodial care. This paid leave may be used in combination with other leave benefits. Detailed information on the Parental Leave Policy and other leave benefits may be found on the DHRM website.

Provisions of the Parental Leave for faculty are outlined by the Virginia Community College System under VCCS policy 3.9.5.1. (click Policies, Human Resources, then 3.09 – Faculty Leave.
