SUR 140 - Surgical Care I (3 CR.)

Course Description

Introduces concepts of the surgical process including preparing the patient for surgery, transporting, positioning, and special preparation procedures of the surgical patient. Presents diagnostic and assessment procedures of the surgical patient including the importance of safety. Discusses the basic principles of aseptic technique.
Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

The purpose of this course is to develop competency in surgical microbial infection control in the Central Sterilization environment. The main focus is having students understand how to protect the patient as well as themselves as the health care providers. The course introduces students to these topics without any lab experience.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisite: Admission to the Surgical Technology Program or permission of instructor. Corequisite: SUR 145

Course Objectives

  • Discuss the needs of the surgical patient and family
  • Discuss proper techniques in positioning and transporting patients for specific surgical procedures
  • Compare and contrast different types of assessment and diagnostic procedures
  • Identify safety risks associated with the operating room
  • Discuss techniques to prevent injuries, especially as they relate to handling sharp instruments
  • Review guidelines and regulations related to aseptic technique
