RTH 245 - Pharmacology for Respiratory Care II (2 CR.)
Course Description
Concentrates on pharmacologic agents used in the management of the critically ill patient. Lecture 2 hours per week.
General Course Purpose
This course is offered in the second semester of the respiratory therapy program. This is the second part of a two-part pharmacology class.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Prerequisites: RTH 102, RTH 111, RTH 145, and RTH 151.
Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Illustrate the mode of action for various pharmacologic agents and different forms in which they are dispensed.
- Explain local and systemic effects of pharmacologic agents and factors influencing the actions of drugs.
- Select appropriate delivery methods for Mucolytics, Inhaled Corticosteroids, Surface-Active Agents, Mediator Antagonists, Antibiotics, Antimicrobials, Neuromuscular Blocking and Reversal Agents, Inhaled Pulmonary Vasodilators, Cardiovascular Agents, Sedatives and Hypnotics, Analgesics, Narcotic Antagonists, Benzodiazepine Antagonists, Antifibrinolytics, Anticoagulants, Surfactants, and Diuretic agents.
- Identify specific pharmacologic agents and their use in treating respiratory diseases.
- Analyze indications, hazards, and complications of different pharmacologic agents.
