RTH 215 - Pulmonary Rehabilitation (1 CR.)
Course Description
Focuses on purpose and implementation of comprehensive pulmonary rehabilitation program. Lecture 1 hour per week.
General Course Purpose
The purpose of this course is to review the therapy and procedures performed in a Pulmonary Rehabilitation setting and the home setting of those patients including health promotion information.
Course Prerequisites/Corequisites
Prerequisites: RTH 135 and RTH 296.
Course Objectives
Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:
- Develop a pulmonary rehabilitation plan according to patient assessment findings
- Evaluate and monitor graded exercise programs and patient performance
- Utilize skills to monitor and troubleshoot home respiratory care equipment and apnea monitors
- Modify respiratory care procedures for use at home
- Distinguish between safety and infection control practices at home vs. hospital
- Explain planned therapy and goals to patient in comprehensible terms to achieve optimal therapeutic outcome.
- Educate patients and families concerning smoking cessation and disease management
- Assess social determinants of health and health inequality/barrier to healthcare
