RTH 145 - Pharmacology for Respiratory Care I (1 CR.)

Course Description

Presents selection criteria for the use of, and detailed information on pharmacologic agents used in pulmonary care. Laboratory 2 hours per week. Total 3 hours per week.

General Course Purpose

This course prepares the respiratory therapy student with the pharmacology knowledge needed for entry into the first clinical course taught in the 2nd semester of the program.

Course Prerequisites/Corequisites

Prerequisites: RTH 102, RTH 111, RTH 145, and RTH 151.

Course Objectives

Upon completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • Illustrate the mode of action for various pharmacologic agents and different forms in which they are dispensed
  • Explain local and systemic effects of pharmacologic agents and factors influencing the actions of drugs
  • Discuss and demonstrate the administration of Aerosolized Bronchodilators via small volume nebulizer, metered dose inhaler, and dry powdered inhaler
  • Identify specific pharmacologic agents  and their use in treating respiratory diseases
  • Analyze indications, hazards, and complications of different pharmacologic agents 
  • Apply evidence-based practice to recommend pharmacologic intervention
